As a writer I love a good metaphor. I love using stories to connect with my reader and to enhance their understanding.

So when I came across The Pencil’s Tale, I knew I had to share it with you.

5 Lessons for Living with Heart and Purpose from The Pencil’s Tale

Here are the things the pencil maker shared with the pencil before he sent it out into the world:

  1. You can do great things, but only if you put yourself in someone else’s hands. In other words, collaborations and partnerships allow you to do more than you are able to do on your own.
  2. Painful sharpenings make you a better pencil.
  3. You can always correct any mistakes you make on the page.
  4. The most important part of you is what’s on the inside.
  5. Always leave your mark. Do what you were created to do.

These life lessons aren’t new. I’ve heard them from many people. You have, too. But hearing them from the perspective of a pencil, made them resonate with me a little differently.

You, too?

While these 5 are powerful and important to remember, I’m going to be so bold as to add another lesson to help the pencil live a fulfilled and successful life:

6. Be the best pencil you can be. Don’t compare yourself to an ink pen, marker, or crayon. Stand tall and embrace who you are. Confidently live in the spotlight of your strengths.

Which of these pencil lessons are resonating most with you today?

I hope that each time you see a pencil … each time you pick one up and write with it … that you’ll remember The Pencil’s Tale. I hope you’ll take these lessons to heart and be an amazing pencil!
